Nonprofit and social impact organizations exist to compensate for two major gaps that leave people vulnerable to poverty and inequality: market and government failures. These failures disproportionately affect communities of color, specifically the black and Latino community in the United States. Although well intentioned, sometimes organizations alienate or sometimes entirely omit the diverse and complex communities they want to help.
In order to develop solutions that create truly effective and responsible interventions to poverty in these communities, DEI must be at the heart of how the organization strategizes, operates and delivers programs and services. In this session, attendees will learn how DEI can guide nonprofit strategy from design, management and measurement. The workshop will cover discussion of how the civil rights movement should inform our work and language around social change today, techniques to work in partnership with the communities being served and ensure that marketing avoids reductive or one-sided narratives. The session will be an interactive lecture with activities and discussion.
Note: This session is a 3-hour workshop and requires pre-registration (FAQ #8). The purpose of the Deep Dives are to give participants an opportunity to spend more time thinking and learning about a particular topic or skill.
